Board Basics
What size did should I get and is there a
difference between kids boards and adult boards?
Fundamentally, there is no difference between skateboards for kids, and
skateboards for adults. It all depends on how tall you are, what surface
you're riding, and is the skateboard for cruising or for tricks.
For starters, here's a simple chart that we like to refer to:
|
Mini Deck - Youth |
|
Pro Deck - Full Size |
| Age Range |
6-11 |
|
12 |
| Height |
4' 5" to 5' |
|
5'5" |
| Deck Size |
7.25" W x 29"
L |
|
7.75" W x 31" L |
Now depending on what surface you're riding and if you are cruising
or doing tricks, your skateboard deck choice will vary. Generally
if you're a serious rider, and the main purpose is to cruise, you'll
want a bit bigger board with a smoother concave, and if you're doing
tricks you'll want a smaller skateboard deck with a deeper
concave. Though for the average riders...the grid above will get
you 98% of the way there. Is there a difference
in quality of skateboard decks?
Absolutely!!! Our 1st suggestion is to only get skateboard
decks that are made from 100% Hard Rock Maple from Canada or from the
Great Lake Area. Hard rock maple is the current choice for quality skateboard
decks. Hard rock maple (Sugar maple or (Acer saccharum) is a
tough, hard wood with a low moisture content. Sugar maple is restricted
to areas with cool and moist climates particularly in the north east of
the United States and the south east of Canada. The more moisture a wood
has the more flexible the board will be, less moisture means less
flexing and more stiffness for more pop. Our 2nd suggestion
is to STAY AWAY from the cheap skateboard decks from the mass
chain stores which are in our opinion have skateboard decks that are
mass produced and cheaply made with little regard for quality. Should
I get a skateboard deck that is completely constructed or should I build
my own skateboard deck?
Complete skateboard decks are
well..."complete". The skateboard deck, grip-tape, trucks,
wheels, and bearings are already assembled
and ready to ride. Typically, the complete skateboard decks are less
expensive than "a la carte" skateboard decks because Brands
are able to bulk buy parts and create economies of scale. So it's
a saving to the customer in terms of time and money. Building a
skateboard deck "a la carte" provides a bit more individualize
because you can then pick which bearings, different color wheels, and
perhaps different trucks. For the average skateboard rider...it's just a
matter of how much you want to customize your board. Our suggestion
would be to just make sure that the complete skateboard decks have
reputable grip-tape, trucks, wheels, and bearings along with a high
quality 7-Ply 100% Hard Rock Maple board.
